Starting a home based business has its steps and procedures just like any other business. Before you can start any home based business, here are steps and procedures you need to follow;

1. Identify a Need : Need is simply something that you can’t afford not to have. Before you can set up a home based business, you must first of all discover the need of your potential buyer. Make sure that the business you want to set up is one that people will be interested to buy into.

2. What to sell: Talking about selling; it is pertinent to note that one can sell a product as well as a service. So, ask yourself what you would like to offer to the buyers and how you would package the offer to make it appealing even to a buyer who does not seem to be interested.

3. Do a thorough research: One thing is to identify a need; another is to research properly to know the viability of the business, the capital intensiveness, how to go about the business, the techniques involved etc. Also have a good knowledge of the business as this will determine its continuity.

4. Check the cost: If the business involves finance, you will be doing yourself much good to check the cost of bringing the business to life, maintenance and sustainability.

5. Your target audience: know your would-be-customers. Who are you expecting to buy your product or service? Where are they located? What strategy would you use to get them to buying from you? All these are important as your analysis will determine the life span of the business.

6. Know your competitor: It is possible that the business you want to go into is the kind that somebody out there is already doing. This simply means that you will have to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your competitor, take advantage of their weakness, work it out to your advantage and that will even pull their customers to your doorstep.

7. Stick with what you enjoy doing: For you to succeed in any business venture, you must make sure that the concept of your business is something you find interesting. The saying, “Do what you love, love what you do” should not be taken lightly. Your business is going to be your livelihood – you should have a good time doing it. If not, it will be difficult to get motivated at times.

8. Have a proper record keeping ability: You do not need to be an accountant before you can be a record keeper. There are simple accounting principles that you need to understand in order for you to last in business whether online or offline.

9. Take action: At this point, you must have identified a need, known what to sell, known the cost, known your target audience, known your competitors, love the kind of product or service you want to provide and then, you start your business.

10. Market Penetration: Now that you are set, sell your product/service to the buyer.
